Welcome to Agrabah!

The Challenge

The 2023 ice show tells the story of the classic "Aladdin" - a story set in the desert, projected onto ice! In addition to this great challenge, expectations were high for the appearance of a flying carpet - a visually striking and crucial element in the narrative that would have to come to life on stage, raising more complex engineering issues. A musical staged by Sissi Martins, one of Portugal's leading musical theater directors, which obviously becomes very challenging on its own.

Idea

Inspired by the classic "Aladdin", this musical was anchored in a disruptive script based on the theme of freedom, always in a vibrant, fun and unexpected way. A mind-blowing adventure, full of magic, where circus arts and enchanting characters took the audience on a journey through the kingdom of Agrabah! With the motto "unleash the genius in you!", everyone was invited to follow a storyline that also broke free from the original, inspiring reflection and the conquest of new paths on the road to freedom.

Implementation

We took Agrabah to the AM Arena at MAR Shopping Matosinhos.

An experience that began inside the mall itself, with the point of sale decorated and the communication clearly visible, and went on to the Arena - with the entire foyer visually transformed to create immersion, projecting the audience into Agrabah, where the story took place. With suspended fabrics, a photopoint that invited you to travel on a flying carpet and Arabic-style decorative details, "Aladdin on Ice" was already an off-stage experience, and on stage the magic extended to the surrounding scenery, where the city's marketplace was rich in smells, colors, lights and movement. An innovative setting, with a rich story that was told on an ice rink of almost 400 m2, by a team of excellent actors and technicians, in a 100% national production.

After 118 sessions, over a 52-day season, with 91846 spectators, the musical had a recommendation rate of 4.8 (on a scale of up to 5)*.

"By assembling the right team, and knowing who we create our shows for and what emotions we want to exalt, we can aim our efforts at the big challenges."

For Bruno Galvão, AM LIVE's producer, "The biggest challenge of having produced Aladdin on Ice began with the title itself: it's a title that is very present in the public's imagination, with a lot of richness, magic and that raises the public's expectations exponentially. That's why we considered it an act of courage to present this title. If you add to this the fact that it's being performed on an ice stage, the challenge becomes even greater."

The producer also adds that "By assembling the right team, and knowing who we create our shows for and what emotions we would like to exalt, we were able to focus our efforts on the big challenges: magical and grandiose scenery, which would bring us the atmosphere of Agrabah and allow the show to have speed and movement; rich costumes, which would meet the imagery of the story and a flying carpet that would surprise. Focusing on these main challenges and putting all the focus on creating a high-quality story and music, with an excellent cast and technical team, we felt that our wishes had been fulfilled. In fact, it was enough to unleash the genius that exists in each of the people on this team and... wish fulfilled!"
